There are non-invasive treatments for varicose veins. Millions of people suffer from the unsightly and painful varicose veins, but are often wary of some of the techniques used to treat them. One technique that was popular many years ago is known as vein stripping. The doctor, often a specialist in veins known as a phlebotomist, would make an incision in the leg and physically pull the vein out. This minor surgery was painful and required an extended recovery period. Our physicians at Advanced Vein and Laser Center of Lancaster and York are pleased to offer non-invasive treatments for varicose veins.

Traditional Sclerotherapy

One popular non-invasive treatment for varicose veins is called Traditional Sclerotherapy, which is used to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. During Traditional Sclerotherapy, the AVLC doctor injects a solution called a sclerosant into the vein. The sclerosant can be made of saline solution, or salt-water sodium tetradecyl sulfate. The sclerosant scars the veins, and they die soon after. The blood they carried is rerouted to other, healthier veins. The body simply reabsorbs the dead veins.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

For larger varicose veins, a popular treatment option is known as Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. This treatment is performed under the guidance of ultrasound. Similar to Traditional Sclerotherapy, a foaming solution is injected into the vein(s), which in turn causes the veins to shrink down in size. Often times the patient will notice a relief in physical appearance and symptoms of the vein(s) one to three months after the treatment. Occasionally patients will need to return to have other veins treated.

Both Traditional Sclerotherapy and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy are less invasive, less painful and safer alternatives to surgical vein stripping treatments. They improve the appearance of the veins and help to reduce the health risks associated with varicose veins. Additionally, the recovery time for both of these procedures is minimal.

If you or someone you know if suffering from varicose vein problems, we suggest you contact our York or Lancaster AVLC offices to schedule a consultation. Our team will provide a customized plan for you to get your veins back to health!
