Sclerotherapy at Advanced Vein & Laser Center
When you visit us for a sclerotherapy in York, you will work with Dr. Heird to build a solution for your spider and varicose veins.
How It Works
A sclerotherapy is a treatment designed to reduce the appearance of spider veins and small varicose veins effectively. It involves injecting a solution into the problem vein that causes the vein’s walls to collapse and stick together. As a result, your blood reroutes to healthy veins nearby, your body gradually reabsorbs the damaged tissue. The vein then gradually fades over the next few weeks and months.
What to Expect
Before any vein treatment at Advanced Vein & Laser Center, you visit for an initial consultation with one of our doctors. They evaluate your varicose or spider veins and talk with you about your symptoms. These conditions often cause leg pain in addition to cosmetic concerns. Based on this conversation, they craft a treatment plan designed for your specific needs. This may include one or more sessions of sclerotherapy in York.
When you arrive for your sclerotherapy procedure, we first map out the affected veins. During an ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, we map out all the abnormal veins, including those deep beneath the surface. If not using ultrasound, we use an infrared light device called a VeinViewer to illuminate your veins.
After the initial examination, you lie comfortably on a treatment table with your affected leg exposed. Dr. Heird uses a very small needle to inject a foaming solution into your vein. This solution causes the vein walls to collapse and seals the vein.
For the next 20 to 30 minutes, you relax in our treatment room while the solution takes effect, after which, Dr. Heird applies a compression stocking to your leg. Before you leave, one of our specialists reviews your post-care instructions with you and has you walk around for about 30 minutes. We will schedule a follow-up appointment to check on the results of your sclerotherapy.
After Your Procedure

Before you leave our office, we will apply compression stocking or wrap to the treated leg. Make sure to wear it for a full 24 hours after your sclerotherapy. Wait to shower or take a bath until after this 24 hour period has passed and you can take the compression stocking off. For the next 7 to 10 days, continue to wear your compression stocking during the day.
For the first 2 to 6 weeks, you may feel some mild discomfort and experience bruising as the targeted vein hardens and is absorbed by your body. Both these side effects are completely normal, and they should dissipate on their own within a few weeks. You can use a warm compress to relieve discomfort.
For 4 to 6 weeks after your sclerotherapy, avoid exposing the treated area to sunlight. While outdoors, wear sunscreen SPF 45 or greater and/or wear clothes that completely cover your skin.
