Leg Pain Q & A

Leg Pain Q & A

How does leg pain signal vascular disease?

Although occasional leg pain and soreness don’t typically warrant a visit to the doctor, leg pain and fatigue that occur after activity, such as walking or climbing stairs, may be a sign of an underlying problem.

AVLC leg pain treatment specialists

Leg pain is a classic symptom of peripheral artery disease (PAD), a medical condition that requires treatment. If not PAD, other vascular problems also cause leg pain, including:

    • Thrombosis (blood clot)
    • Venous insufficiency
    • Varicose veins
    • Spider veins

Expert vascular surgeons Dr. Heird and Dr. Winand diagnose and treat the underlying cause of your leg pain so you can resume a healthy, active life.

What is peripheral artery disease?

When you have PAD, your arteries are too narrow to carry enough oxygen-rich blood to other parts of your body. This condition most often affects the legs, but PAD can reduce circulation to any part of your body. Other than leg pain, common symptoms of PAD include:
  • Leg numbness or weakness
  • Sores on the feet or legs that won’t heal
  • Color changes in the legs
  • Hair loss on the legs
  • Slower toenail growth
  • Coldness in the lower leg or foot
  • Erectile dysfunction in men
Most of the time, PAD is a sign of atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries, due to a buildup of fatty deposits. In addition to affecting your legs, PAD can reduce the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your brain and heart.

How do you diagnose and treat vascular leg pain?

First, Dr. Heird or Dr. Winand performs a comprehensive physical exam and reviews your medical history. They may take additional tests, such as ultrasound imaging or blood tests, to diagnose the exact cause of your leg pain. Then, they develop a personalized treatment plan that best addresses your condition. Depending on your needs, treatment may include:
  • Healthy lifestyle changes
  • Medications to reduce complications
  • Traditional sclerotherapy
  • Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
  • Ambulatory phlebectomy
  • Radiofrequency ablation
Lifestyle changes may include quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and getting regular exercise to encourage proper circulation. Medications may help manage your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, or prevent blood clots. If you have leg pain or other symptoms of vascular disease, call Advanced Vein & Laser Center or book an appointment online today.
