What is peripheral artery disease?

When you have PAD, your arteries are too narrow to carry enough oxygen-rich blood to other parts of your body. This condition most often affects the legs, but PAD can reduce circulation to any part of your body. Other than leg pain, common symptoms of PAD include:

Sores on the feet or legs that won’t heal
Color changes in the legs
Hair loss on the legs
Slower toenail growth
Coldness in the lower leg or foot
Erectile dysfunction in men

Most of the time, PAD is a sign of atherosclerosis, or a hardening of the arteries, due to a buildup of fatty deposits. In addition to affecting your legs, PAD can reduce the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your brain and heart.

How do you diagnose and treat vascular leg pain?

First, Dr. Heird or Dr. Winand performs a comprehensive physical exam and reviews your medical history. They may take additional tests, such as ultrasound imaging or blood tests, to diagnose the exact cause of your leg pain. Then, they develop a personalized treatment plan that best addresses your condition. Depending on your needs, treatment may include:
