Physical Treatments for Lymphedema
Advanced Vein and Laser Center is privileged to provide multiple treatment options for patients suffering from lymphedema and leg swelling. If you’re looking for a lymphedema doctor in Lancaster, make AVLC your first stop.
Pneumatic Pumps
One treatment option for lymphedema and leg swelling is compression with pneumatic pumps. During this treatment, you’ll slide a padded, inflatable stocking over the afflicted leg. A pump then inflates the stocking and provides gentle, rolling pressure to your leg. This pressure helps stimulate blood flow and steer excess fluid to your lymph nodes, reducing swelling.
Compression Stockings
We also recommend compression stockings to treat both leg swelling and lymphedema. Compression stockings are tight socks worn underneath your clothing to squeeze your legs gently and improve circulation.
If your care plan includes compression stockings, we will advise you how long to wear them every day for the best results.
Treating Venous Insufficiencies
Swelling in your legs may be caused by or exacerbated by a venous insufficiency. For example, varicose veins or other damage to your blood vessels can contribute to swelling. We offer multiple nonsurgical solutions to these problems to improve your venous health.
Sclerotherapy
During sclerotherapy, we inject a specialized solution into a spider vein or a small varicose vein. This solution causes the walls of the blood vessel to stick together and collapse, selling it off from blood flow. Your blood flow then shifts to healthier veins nearby, leading to improvements in pain, itching, swelling, and more. Over time, the vein fades as your body reabsorbs the vein tissue.
RF Ablation
During an RF ablation treatment, we use radiofrequency energy to generate heat, which directly damages the vein wall. This causes the vein to collapse, sealing it off and immediately interrupting blood flow. Over time, your body naturally reroutes circulation to healthier veins. On average, an RF ablation appointment takes about an hour and effectively relieves symptoms.
Lifestyle Changes
By making certain lifestyle changes, you can prevent and alleviate many of the symptoms of lymphedema and leg swelling. If your career involves standing or sitting for long periods of time, take breaks throughout the day and walk around. You can also elevate your legs above your heart for half an hour a few times a day to encourage excess fluid to drain.
Consistent physical exercise can also help ease lymphedema and leg swelling. This exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous; gentle, low-impact activities like walking or swimming can help improve blood flow and stimulate lymphatic drainage. These can also provide a variety of health benefits to the rest of your body.
