Sclerotherapy Q & A
Sclerotherapy Q & A
What is Sclertotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice to diminish the appearance of spider veins and small varicose veins. Advanced Vein & Laser Center surgeons Dr. Heird and Dr. Winand offer both traditional and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy procedures. For ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, Dr. Heird or Dr. Winand takes a detailed ultrasound of the affected area prior to treatment. They use the ultrasound to map out the abnormal veins. When not using ultrasound guidance, Dr. Heird or Dr. Winand use an infrared light device called a VeinViewer® to illuminate your veins. Before your procedure, Dr. Heird or Dr. Winand carefully evaluates your varicose or spider veins and discusses any symptoms you may have. Often, varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic issue; they can cause leg pain. Then, the doctors develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include one or more sclerotherapy treatments with or without ultrasound guidance.
What happens during a sclerotherapy procedure?
During the sclerotherapy procedure, you lie comfortably on the treatment table with the affected leg exposed. Dr. Heird or Dr. Winand inserts a very small needle into the abnormal vein and injects a foaming solution. The foam causes the walls of the treated vein to collapse and seal off. Sclerotherapy treatment typically lasts less than one hour and causes minimal discomfort. After treatment, you lie on the table for 20-30 minutes while Dr. Heird or Dr. Winand applies a compression stocking to the treated leg. Afterward, you should wear the stocking for 7-10 days, only during the day. Dr. Heird performs this procedure right in the AVLC York office, and Dr. Winand offers it at the Lancaster location.
What results can I expect from sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy improves the appearance of spider and varicose veins, but it isn’t a rapid miracle cure. About 75-80% of the abnormal veins will lighten or disappear. Full results can take 4-12 weeks to appear.
What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?
After your sclerotherapy procedure, you may experience mild discomfort or bruising in the treated leg. These side effects are common and should dissipate within 2-6 weeks. The treatment area may also be sensitive to sunlight. You should avoid direct sun exposure on the treatment area or use a sunscreen of SPF 45 or above for 4-6 weeks after sclerotherapy. To find out if you’re a good candidate for sclerotherapy, call Advanced Vein & Laser Center or book an appointment online.
