What Is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy?

June 17, 2016

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy is a specialized process done for the treatment of advanced varicose veins concealed under the skin.

This process is extremely effective as well as safe, involving an injection of a sclerosant solution. This injection is inserted directly into the abnormal veins through ultrasound guidance, which collapse the vein wall. The veins disappear and dissolve as the body eventually absorbs them.

Starting The Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy Process

Before the procedure, a detailed examination of duplex ultrasound is carried out to make a virtual map of the veins in the lower leg.

This map accurately shows all abnormal veins and adjacent structures, for example, deep arteries and veins, and helps the doctor in identifying the major cause of the visible varicose veins.

As soon as the duplex examination has been done, the patient lies securely with the treated leg exposed on the treatment bed. The surgeon can precisely insert the needle with ultrasound guidance and inject the abnormal and hidden veins, at the same time monitoring the procedure on the ultrasound monitor.

The treated vessel will collapse once it is injected, and with time, it gets absorbed by the body, eventually disappearing. There are several injections required along the length of the vein for achieving complete closure.

Another major benefit of this procedure is that it enables the phlebologist to observe the effect of each injection, ensuring the safety of all adjacent structures. This procedure has become more effective with the use of sclerosant as foam, instead of solution.

After Treatment

Typically the treatment takes 30 minutes; however, 60 minutes are allocated to allow enough time for ultrasound examination, preparation of patient and discussion. Once the procedure is completed, the patient is asked to go for a half-hour walk for the blood flow promotion into the veins that are very deep.
