Vein Health: Why You Need to be Concerned

For every individual over the age of 40, it is important to maintain healthy veins. Veins, vessels that transport the blood to the heart, are very important in order for the body to function properly. They work in conjunction with arteries, blood vessels that bring blood away from the heart and to other parts of the body. In order for the circulation within your body to function properly, both veins and arteries need to be healthy and unobstructed. However, many people suffer from poor vein health, which can disrupt the entire body. In order to prevent vein disease, there are many actions that an individual can take to protect his or her body.

As we all get older, there are several types of vein disease that we may suffer from. Although some have minimal affects on the body, others can really disturb the blood circulation and can lead to long lasting issues.

A few of the common vein diseases that can affect the body:

Deep Vein Thrombosis: This disease can occur throughout the body but is more often seen in the legs. This occurs when a large vein develops a blood clot, thus preventing the blood from traveling to the heart.

Pulmonary Embolism: This condition occurs when a blood clot separates and begins to travel to the lung area. This can be especially dangerous and without treatment can lead to other life impairing conditions including death.

Chronic Venous Disease: This is the most common condition that can affect the veins. The veins can become infected and will begin to operate abnormally. The most well known Chronic Venous Disease, varicose veins, is a condition that affects millions of men and women each year.

Varicose veins usually occur when the veins begin to swell and develop a purple-reddish color, sometimes visible underneath the skin. In most cases, they will begin to bulge, which occurs because the veins become twisted. In many cases, varicose veins can be hereditary, but other risk factors can lead to varicose veins.Although there are many causes for varicose veins, they are typically seen more often in obese people and individuals who are pregnant. If you have a job where you stand a lot, then you may be susceptible to varicose veins.

How do you address Chronic Venous Diseases?

If you are suffering from a vein condition, it is essential that you seek medical treatment. In addition to potential cosmetic issues, varicose and spider veins can also cause long-term health issues. This is particularly true if the problem veins are in the deep layers of the skin and remain untreated. If your lower legs and ankles swell, are tired or feel restless, don’t just chalk it up to a long day at work. Vein treatments can correct many issues before serious health complications occur.
