Varicose Vein Discomfort

Varicose vein discomfort is real. Whether they are visible or not, varicose veins often come with discomfort to those who suffer from them. They are more prominent in the legs than other areas of the body. Aching, tired, “heavy” feeling legs are some of the most common symptoms.

Do you suffer from varicose veins?

Due to the serious issues varicose veins can lead to, we strongly suggest you request a consultation. However, we understand how serious the discomfort can be from varicose veins. So, our team at AVLC has listed some measures you can take to decrease the discomfort throughout your day.

 Exercise.

Walking and/or exercise are both ways to increase blood circulation in your legs. Remember to consult your doctor to find out what the appropriate activity level is for you.

Move.

Don’t sit or stand for extended periods of time. Moving around and changing positions encourage blood flow in the veins.

Don’t sit like a lady.

This one’s true folks. Sitting with your legs crossed is believed to cause circulation problems.

Your shoes.

Another true fact – high heels can wreak havoc on your legs (as well as your feet). Lower heeled shoes promote activity in your calf muscles which in turn is better for your veins.

Your clothing.

Your fashion sense doesn’t need to be compromised, however, we suggest avoiding tight clothes in the waist, leg, and groin areas. These can cause a reduction in blood flow, increasing varicose vein issues.

Diet.

Watch what you eat. Healthy foods, including a high-fiber, low-fat and low-salt diet will help prevent excess pounds and water retention, taking pressure off of your veins.

Prop up your legs.

If you are experiencing serious discomfort in your legs, take several breaks throughout your day to elevate your legs. The key here though is to make sure you are elevating your legs above the level of your heart. This can be easily done by lying down and placing a few pillows underneath your legs. This will help improve blood circulation.
