Congratulations! Now that you’ve had sclerotherapy and made a significant investment in your well-being, you’re well on your way to feeling refreshed and looking rejuvenated. To achieve the best possible results, the AVLC doctors at our Lancaster and York offices recommend you incorporate the following into your routine.

Zero Recovery Period
Sclerotherapy is such a minimally invasive and safe procedure that, unlike traditional vein surgery, this treatment has a very minimal recovery period. Although you will be able to walk away from our office afterward, we recommend that you refrain from running, jogging, aerobics or other vigorous exercise for 24 hours. Since there are no bed rest requirements, feel free to walk out of our office and over to a lunch date with friends or family or return to your office and enjoy a productive afternoon. Whatever you choose to do, please know that the area around the treated veins will appear somewhat red and be a bit inflamed. This is a normal reaction to the medication used to treat your veins and may last for up to two weeks.

Make Your Best Results Happen
While you wait for your maximum results, which typically appear by 6 to 8 weeks, there are many action steps you can take to maximize your improvement. Since these steps all target vein health, they will help your treated vein health and improve the health of all your veins without vein surgery. After sclerotherapy, you should wear the graduated compression stockings or elastic bandages as prescribed by your doctor. These are important because they promote healthy circulation in your legs. Other means of enhancing healing through optimizing circulation include walking every day, sitting with uncrossed legs and alternating sitting with standing.

If you have discolored skin near your treated vein, don’t panic. This is perfectly normal after sclerotherapy because the red blood cells that are dying release an iron storage complex called hemosiderin into the surrounding tissues. Hemosiderin release is also the reason your doctor may recommend you stop taking supplemental iron until one month after your sclerotherapy. If you are taking a multivitamin with added iron, this is usually not an issue because most multivitamins do not contain enough iron to increase post-sclerotherapy discoloration. Hemosiderin stains typically fade with time and those stains that persist after a year can be treated with simple skin laser treatment by our fully credentialed aesthetician.
At AVLC, we’re always here for you. Whether you’re contemplating a procedure or have been our patient for many years, we want you to be happy with your results and recommend you speak with one ofour doctors today.
