5 Often Overlooked Varicose Vein Risks

1 out of 2 women and 1 out of 3 men suffer from vein problems. If you are a woman or man over the age of 40, it is likely that you have noticed varicose veinson your legs, enlarged and twisted veins near the surface of the skin caused by weakened valves and veins in the legs and ankles. Family history, aging, and being overweight or even pregnancy increases the chance of varicose veins developing. Most individuals, especially women, consider varicose veins largely a cosmetic issue. But, when left untreated, varicose veins can lead to more complicated and serious health concerns.

Below are five of the often times overlooked varicose vein risks.

Blood Clots

When circulation is constricted in the veins in the legs, a blood clot can develop, making the legs feel swollen and painful. Blood clots can potentially develop and ultimately lead to a condition known as deep vein thrombosis develops.

Inflammation

Untreated veins that become weaker and weaker can turn into a vein disease called Superficial Thrombophlebitis. This means that the tissues surrounding the veins become inflamed, causing pain, tenderness, swelling and redness to the skin throughout the ankles and legs. This can make movement or walking difficult if not impossible.

Leg Ulcers

Enlarged veins starting to make their appearance just under the skin can ultimately lead to another vein disease known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). CVI can cause venous leg ulcers to develop, destroying the skin surrounding the infected varicose vein, which is not only painful, but also very unpleasant to look at.

Lack of Mobility

Another of the unpleasant varicose vein risk that can develop is an inflammation of leg tissues known as Lipodermosclerosis. This vein disease makes legs feel very heavy, with the patient experiencing mild to extreme discomfort when walking or moving.

Skin Discoloration

Once weakened veins cause blood to leak into the surrounding tissue, a condition known as hyperpigmentation occurs. This causes not only the surrounding surface skin to appear discolored; the leakage of blood in this manner can cause pain when any degree of leg movement is attempted.
